A Reliable Worker

A Reliable Worker
Skill earns trust
Bogdan Jankowski has built and maintained much of Ian Ventham’s property, from pools to alarms. Ventham offers him the job of replacing Curran as site manager.
A quiet life in motion
Bogdan is an engineer by training and values challenge more than money. His calm manner makes him easy to underestimate, even as he observes the village closely.
A Friend Is Murdered

A Friend Is Murdered
Kazimir witnesses violence
Bogdan’s close friend Kazimir drives Gianni to the woods, where Gianni kills him after using him to dig a grave. The murder reaches Bogdan through the loose talk of Gianni’s associates.
Grief becomes a decision
Bogdan lures Gianni to Newhaven and kills him, then takes money and valuables. He sends part of the stolen money to Kazimir’s family and helps Steve Georgiou establish a gym.
A False Trail Is Built

A False Trail Is Built
Disappearance engineered
Bogdan and Steve use Gianni’s passport to make it appear that Gianni escaped to Cyprus. Bogdan anonymously directs police toward the apparent flight, while Gianni’s body remains undiscovered.
The past is buried twice
The cover story protects Bogdan and Steve, but it also creates a long-term danger: the truth depends on everyone maintaining silence. Bogdan’s practical competence extends from construction into criminal concealment.
Bogdan Kills Curran

Bogdan Kills Curran
Access creates opportunity
Bogdan installs Curran’s alarm system and deliberately leaves it ineffective, giving himself a way into the house. He uses a copied key and waits for the moment he believes the risk is manageable.
A private motive remains hidden
Bogdan kills Curran to avenge Kazimir and the taxi-driver friend whose death he connects to Curran’s criminal world. His motive is not financial, although he takes the opportunity to remove money and protect the future he has built.
A Confession in Chess

A Confession in Chess
Stephen draws out the truth
While playing chess, Stephen asks Bogdan about Tony Curran and patiently lets him explain the killings. Bogdan speaks freely because he trusts Stephen and believes Elizabeth will understand.
Consequences remain uncertain
Elizabeth learns what Bogdan did but does not immediately expose him to the police. His usefulness, kindness, and culpability coexist, leaving the club to weigh justice against loyalty.
